Presently    working      under the State Thalassaemia Control Programme,   West Bengal State Health & Family Welfare Samity; - with the help of two Nodal Centres, located at Institute of Haematology  & Trans­ fusion  Medicine,  Kolkata and at Haematology Deptartment of N.R.S. Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.

Objective:

To generate awareness for Thalassaemia free Next generation among the School and College Students through-"Screening of the Carriers for Beta Thalassaemia & proper Counseling."


 

Facilities available at the centre :


  • HPLC based fully automated variant haemoglobin testing system

  • Fully automated 3-part Cell counter (Sysmax)

  • Counseling of Carriers

Cost of sample analysis :


  • Rs. 50/- for students of Schools,Colleges,Universities

  • For Anti-natal mother-free of cost

  • For parents,brother and sisters ofThalassaemia patients-free of cost

  • For person holding BPL family ID No.-free of cost

Our achievement:


  • Operated since, January 2008

  • Till date we have screened more than 6500 samples for carrier detection and almost 5% carrier have been detected among the total samples tested.

  • We have organised  more  than  25 awarness  programme  in  the  school and colleges of the subdivision

  • Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath  College Parivar has taken the  oath of 100% screening of the students through HPCL



Our Motivation


  • One ICMR project at NRS Medical College Kolkata initited the Screening Programme in the College during 2003-04.

  • Sri Tarit Baran Topder, MP, (2004-2009) Dr. K. D. Ghosh, Dr. Praveen Kumar, Dr. Sunil Gope and some faculty members of the college took initiative to develope Screening Programme by installation of one dedicated HPLC machine supported by Cell Counter Machine.

  • Sri Tarit Baran Topder, MP (2004-2009) & Dr. K. D. Ghosh, MLA (2006-2011) funded Rs. 20 lakhs from their respective MPLADS and BEUP.

  • Sub Divisional officer of Barrackpore and chairman of Indian Red Cross Society, Barrackpore Branch and some Charimen of different Municipalities of Barrackpore Sub division also funded initially for the recurring expenditure.
